Derek
Derek’s love for dance began as a kid in the Philippines, imitating Michael Jackson and performing Jabbawockeez choreography at school with his cousins. These early memories sparked a lifelong passion for movement. His deeper connection to street dance culture—especially its history and various styles—was solidified in 2017 at Project Beats Dance Studios in Canberra.
With 8 years of experience, Derek now specializes in locking and popping, bringing a rich understanding of funk styles to his students. He has competed and won at choreography competitions and 1v1 battles across VIC, ACT, and NSW, including major events like Funk Station Vol.1 and The Funktion, where he took home locking titles with pride. He’s also a member of Adventure Crew, with whom he’s achieved success in various team competitions.
In Derek’s classes at Passion, students can expect to:
Learn the foundations and history of locking
Practice fun drills and routines
Discover their own unique style within the form
Funk music sets the tone, and the vibe is always positive, energetic, and fun. Derek is all about building confidence and self-expression through understanding—not just moves, but where they come from and why they matter.
His teaching motto:“Take the attitude of a student—never be too big to ask questions, never know too much to learn something new.”
